What to Expect

How a typical engagement unfolds

No two engagements look identical — but every one moves at your pace, with the structure of the method underneath.

1

An honest conversation

Your first session is mostly listening — Holly hears your story, the kind of loss you’re carrying, and what you’re hoping for. Together you decide whether and how to proceed.

2

The same method, just for you

Each session walks through one piece of the Grief Recovery Method, adapted to your relationship and your timing. No group dynamic, no waiting your turn.

3

Action between sessions

You’ll have a small, specific exercise to work on between sessions. Often this is where the real shift happens — and Holly is in your corner all the way through it.

4

You finish with tools

Most people complete the work in around seven sessions, though pacing is yours. You leave with new ways to relate to grief that stay with you for life.

Is This the Right Fit?

Who this program serves

This program is for you if…

  • You want privacy. The thought of sharing in a group feels too vulnerable right now.
  • Your loss is sensitive — estrangement, suicide, addiction, abuse, or anything you don’t want to unpack in front of others.
  • Your schedule won’t bend to a fixed weekly group time, and you need flexibility.
  • You’ve been to a group before and the format wasn’t the right fit — you do better one-on-one.
  • You want to start now. Group cohorts have set start dates; one-on-one can begin almost any time.

You may want a different fit if…

  • You’re currently in acute crisis — please reach out to a licensed therapist or call 988 first.
  • Community support is what you’re craving. Our Group Grief Recovery program may be a better fit.
  • You’re grieving a pet specifically. Pet Loss Recovery is built for that.

Holly creates a space where I felt safe to bring things I had never said out loud. The method gave me a path forward and she made it feel possible.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

How is this different from a therapist or counselor?

The Grief Recovery Method is education-based and action-oriented — it’s a structured curriculum you complete, not open-ended therapy. Holly is a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, not a licensed therapist. Many people use the method alongside therapy; the two complement each other well.

Can I switch from one-on-one to a group later (or vice versa)?

Yes — but timing matters. If you want to join a group cohort, you’ll need to start before the group reaches its second week; after that, the cohort is closed and you’d wait for the next class to begin. Moving from a group into one-on-one work is more flexible and can usually be arranged with Holly directly.

How quickly can I start?

One-on-one sessions can typically begin within a week or two of your first conversation — unlike group cohorts, which run on a set start schedule.

What’s a typical session like?

About 60 minutes, working through one piece of the method together — the relationship review, the loss history graph, the unfinished business, the completion letter. Holly walks alongside you through each step.

Are sessions covered by insurance?

Generally no. The Grief Recovery Method is not therapy and isn’t covered by health insurance. As a nonprofit, we keep fees as accessible as possible and scholarships are available.

Can I do sessions virtually?

Yes. In-person is preferred when possible (Ocala, The Villages, surrounding Central Florida), but virtual sessions via video work well and are an option for anyone whose schedule or location requires it.

Is one-on-one usually faster than the group?

It can be — because there’s no group dynamic to navigate — but the method itself takes the time it takes. Most one-on-one engagements complete the core work in about seven sessions.
