God’s Love for All Creatures: A Tribute to Tonx

Scripture is rich with reminders that God deeply cares for His entire creation—including the animal kingdom. In fact, He often uses animals to teach us about His nature and about ourselves.

God compares us—His most prized creation—to sheep, gentle yet in need of guidance (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus Himself is called the Lamb of God, spotless and sacrificial (John 1:29). When He spoke of sparrows, He reminded us that not one falls to the ground without the Father knowing (Matthew 10:29). Such care, such attentiveness—it points to a God who not only created the circle of life but honors and sustains it with divine intention.

In Genesis, God gave Adam the sacred task of naming the animals, parading His beautiful creatures before him as a sign of partnership in creation (Genesis 2:19). Later, He entrusted Noah with their preservation, sending pairs of animals to the ark for protection (Genesis 7:15). In Elijah’s wilderness season, God sent ravens to feed him daily (1 Kings 17:2–6). At Jesus’ baptism, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove—again, an animal used to symbolize peace, purity, and God’s presence (Luke 3:22).

When Christ returns in glory, He will come riding a mighty white horse—a picture of power, majesty, and justice (Revelation 19:11–15).

God doesn’t just love animals as symbols—He cares for them in substance. Proverbs 12:10 tells us plainly: “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” His creation matters to Him—from the smallest sparrow to the grandest beast. As James Herriot wrote in 1972, “All creatures, great and small, the Lord God made them all.”

Tonx: A Gift from God

Fourteen years ago, when my daughter Sarah and I were in deep need of hope, purpose, and something to love, God sent us Tonx.

She was left on our back deck, eyes still closed, without her mother in sight. We bottle-fed her like a newborn baby, nursing her to health. But Tonx was never just another cat. And that’s saying something—because I’ve had hundreds. For whatever reason, the strays have always found me, and multiplied like rabbits.

When I met my husband Tom, he was anti-cat. (Hard to believe now!) And Tonx could sense it. She’d hiss whenever he visited—no warm welcome from her. Tom took it seriously and brought it to the Lord in prayer: “God, I love this woman—but her cat hates me. What do I do?”

One night, the Lord gave him a dream of the two of them bonding. And sure enough, from that moment on, they became fast friends. In fact, she would sometimes skip over me just to curl up in his lap. Besides me, Tom has been the one by her side the most. He’s loved her well—helping with IVs, medicine, and even her vet bills.

Tonx was so much more than a pet. She was a gift. A source of comfort, joy, and companionship like no other animal I’ve ever known. She gave us something to nurture when we needed it most. She brought laughter, love, and warmth into our home. And she will be deeply missed.

But I believe with all my heart that the same God who knows when a sparrow falls, who created the lion and the lamb, who used ravens, doves, and horses for His glory—He sees Tonx. He knows her. And He’s grateful, too, for the joy she gave to us.

Tonx was truly a gift from God.
